The Power of Stillness: Listening for the Soul’s Whispers

An image of still water. Light reflects upon the front of this image. The text reads. "Only in the stillness of detachment can the soul yield up her secrets." (Elsa Barker)

The quote of the day is:

“Only in the stillness of detachment can the soul yield up her secrets.” (Elsa Barker)

Have you ever noticed that the most profound moments of clarity often come when you stop striving for them? I think that is what Elsa Barker, an early 20th-century poet, is pointing towards with this quote.

Stillness. It’s one of those experiences that can feel impossible to describe. So much of what we attempt to capture about stillness, presence, or the soul often relies on language—yet language struggles to define what has no real form. Words simply don’t do justice to the experience.

When I reflect on Elsa Barker’s phrase, “the stillness of detachment,” I understand what she’s pointing toward, but something about the word detachment doesn’t quite fit for me. The feeling of that word doesn’t quite match that experience.

For me, detachment implies disconnection, a sense of being removed from what’s around me. But the stillness I experience feels anything but disconnected. It’s alive and aware, deeply present yet unbothered by my usual thinking, which quiets down almost effortlessly. It seems so vast and yet so intimate and personal at the same time.

It’s in this space—where the noise of thought fades—that the soul and its presence become easier to notice. There’s a sense of grounded calm, of being in the moment without striving to have to figure it all out. It can seem that from here special secrets are being revealed.

But perhaps detachment, in this sense, isn’t about isolation or disconnection. It feels different—it’s gentler, more like a release What if detachment, in this context, isn’t about disconnection at all? What if it’s about letting go—of control, of outcomes, of needing to know? When we let go, stillness has a way of rising naturally, and in that stillness, the soul whispers its truths.

There are times when it seems that you are being shared beautiful truths, something precious being surrendered, as if you are being trusted with something of immense value. Things so gorgeous that you well up with emotion. Then there are secrets that when whispered just seem so obvious that you adapt them into your life without giving it another thought – almost as if it always looked that way to you.

It seems to me that when we allow our thoughts to settle, we tap into a natural stillness. It’s not something we create—it’s always there, waiting for us. When the mind quiets, clarity and wisdom often follow effortlessly.

Elsa Barker’s words remind us that the soul’s truths are often revealed not through effort but in moments of stillness. Perhaps the invitation is not to chase these moments of stillness but to notice them when they arrive—trusting that the soul will reveal what you’re ready to hear. Where might stillness already be waiting for you today?

Unlocking Authentic Potential

Yesterday’s quote, was the proverb: “A golden key can open any door”

A wooden door is closed. Through the keyhole from the other side of the door, bright light shines through, illuminating a golden key that is hovering just in front of the keyhole. The text at the top reads: "A golden key can open any door" (Proverb) The text across the bottom right corner reads: "Your Coaching and a Golden Key."

One of the questions I posted in relation to that was, “How do you interpret the metaphor of a ‘golden key’ in relation to unlocking the potential of your clients?”

Which got me thinking, what do I currently think the key to my coaching is, what is it that consistently makes the biggest difference?

I’m fairly certain that my answer to this question today, is different to how I would have answered this 10 or 15 years ago. So If you’re pondering this for yourself and your coaching, I’m going to add at this stage – it’s OK for your answer to change over time. Personally, I think it’s natural for your style, understanding and approach to evolve over time and not stay static.

Today, my answer is for clients to find their authentic self, for them to connect to their own essence and their soul to awaken.

Unlocking Authentic Potential

In a world where external pressures and societal expectations often obscure our true nature, helping clients reconnect with their authentic selves can be transformative. It involves peeling back the layers of conditioning and societal expectations to reveal the core essence that lies beneath.

By encouraging clients to tap into their inner wisdom and intuition, you’re providing them with the key to unlocking their innate potential. This process of self-discovery and soul awakening is not about conforming to external standards or expectations, but about honouring and embracing the unique qualities that make each individual who they are.

One of the aspects I value about coaching is holding a safe and supportive space for clients to explore and express their authentic selves. Whilst not compulsory, it’s not unusual for clients to have some fear about who or what their authentic self really is – they often fear that there’s something wrong with them, and it can feel really vulnerable to look in that direction.

Through this process, clients can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their desires, paving the way for greater clarity, purpose, and fulfilment in their lives. They begin to see themselves not as they think they should be, but as they truly are – worthy, capable, and deserving of all the goodness life has to offer.

In essence, the “golden key” to unlocking the potential of your clients lies in helping them reconnect with their authentic selves and awaken to the fullness of who they are. It’s about guiding them towards a deeper understanding of their innate worth and potential, empowering them to step into their greatness with confidence and authenticity. Being ourselves simplifies life. When we embrace our true selves, complexities fade away. When you really get to know your true self, your essence, your soul, then I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised – even if you’re reading this thinking, but she doesn’t know me, I’m worthless/unloveable etc.

As you continue on your coaching journey, embracing the metaphor of the “golden key” can serve as a powerful reminder of the profound impact you have the potential to make in the lives of your clients. Your interpretation of what a golden key in your coaching may be entirely different from mine. And that’s okay; it doesn’t make either of us right or wrong. We simply have different approaches and likely work with different clients.

I think it’s interesting and probably useful as a coach to be able to start to describe what impact your coaching can have – what that golden key could do for your clients. For me, helping clients unlock the doors to their authentic selves, it’s not just facilitating personal growth – you’re igniting a transformational journey that has the power to change their lives forever.

Awakening The Soul: What’s At The Heart Of Your Coaching?

A clear blue sky apart from two elongated whispy, feathered clouds which form the shape of two angel wings. The text reads: "My soul is awakened, my spirit is soaring And carried aloft on the wings of the breeze." (Anne Bronte)

Today’s quote is:

“My soul is awakened, my spirit is soaring And carried aloft on the wings of the breeze.” (Anne Bronte)

Do you recognise the description that is being used in this quote? For me it’s pointing to our innate wisdom and resilience of the human spirit. That our experience of life is not determined by external circumstances, but by the quality of our thinking in any given moment. Just as a breeze carries us aloft, when we are in a high state of consciousness, as opposed to a low mood, it feels like we are awake to the limitless possibilities that lie within.

When we’re not in that state, and a low mood, it may seem like we’re walking through treacle and even the idea that the ease and flow that’s being pointed to in the quote can seem so far out of reach and even impossible to see.

Consider, for a moment, the implications of Bronte’s words in the context of coaching. When our soul is awakened, we tap into a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. We connect with our innate wisdom and intuition, guiding us towards paths of fulfilment and joy. As coaches, we have the privilege of facilitating this awakening in our clients, helping them connect with their inner truth and wisdom.

Moreover, when our spirit is soaring, we experience a profound sense of freedom and expansiveness. We transcend the limitations of our ego-driven mind, embracing a state of flow and alignment with the universe. In coaching, we encourage clients to tap into this state of flow, guiding them towards goals they really want and aspirations that resonate with their authentic selves.

Have you noticed how you can tell when a client’s soul is awakened? They come alive, you can hear it in their voice and see the spark in their eyes. One of the ways I personally like to think about my coaching is it’s about finding that spark and fanning it into a flame, it’s that impactful nurturing that I may not know what the content of our conversations will be once that’s been lit but I know that there is a very different feel once we’re there.

In my coaching, I recognise that the awakening of the soul is not a destination but a journey—a journey of self-discovery and transformation. It’s about tapping into our innate wisdom and intuition, guiding us towards paths of fulfilment and joy. As a coach, I view it as a huge privilege of facilitating this awakening in our clients and helping them connect with their inner truth and wisdom.

Moreover, when our spirit is soaring, we experience a profound sense of freedom and expansiveness. We transcend the limitations of our ego-driven mind, embracing a state of flow and alignment with the universe. In coaching, we encourage clients to tap into this state of flow, guiding them towards goals and aspirations that resonate with their authentic selves.

In coaching, you may encounter clients who feel that they are walking through treacle, trapped in a cycle of negative thinking and self-doubt. They may feel overwhelmed by external circumstances or disconnected from their inner truth. Yet, it is precisely in these moments of darkness that the light of transformation begins to shine.

As a coach, I see my role as a guide and companion on this journey of self-discovery. We create a safe and supportive space for clients to explore, guiding them towards greater clarity and insight. We remind them of their innate resilience and resourcefulness, that empower them to overcome obstacles and setbacks with courage and grace.

At the heart of my coaching lies a deep commitment to awakening the soul and guiding clients towards their innate wisdom and resilience. What lies at the heart of your coaching practice? Perhaps we use different words to describe the same essence, or maybe you have a unique philosophy and approach. I invite you to explore and discover what truly drives your coaching practice.

The Soulful Dance of Coaching: Nurturing Transformative Connections

This image has a black sillhute of a forest scene with a warm hazy background, as if at sunrise and the start of a new day. Sillhutes of three human figures are stood facing away from the viewer, as if watching the start of a new day. Written at the bottom of the image is the following text: "Great souls by instinct to each other turn, Demand alliance, and in friendship burn" (Joseph Addison)

Today’s quote of the day is:

“Great souls by instinct to each other turn, Demand alliance, and in friendship burn” (Joseph Addison)

I think this quote resonated with me because it beautifully articulates the essence of deep connections. While its important to say at this stage that coaching is distinct from friendship, for me, there’s an undeniable resonance between these words and the profound experiences that coaching can cultivate.

Exploring the Indescribable:

Depending upon your style and approach, coaching can often delve into realms that challenge easy description. It’s an attempt to articulate the indescribable, a pursuit that might be deemed “woo-woo” by some. In this exploration, I invite you to ponder and recognize your own experiences, considering what draws you to coaching and what you seek in a coaching relationship, both as a coach and a client.

The Flame Within:

One of the enchanting moments in coaching is when a client connects with their “soul” — the instant when they come alive, and you witness the flame within them shining brightly. This transformative spark, often elusive and challenging to articulate, is a magnetic force that transcends mere words. It’s an integral part of my approach to coaching that not all training programs explicitly cover, yet it’s unmistakable when experienced and witnessed.

Authentic Presence and Connection:

Certain coaching approaches create an environment where both coach and client can be authentically present, open, and vulnerable. This authenticity fosters a deep connection that goes beyond verbal communication. Whilst not the only reason, it’s why some coaches insist on connecting with potential clients before committing to a coaching relationship, recognizing the importance of alignment on a profound level.

Believing in the Client:

The question of “believing in a client” might seem perplexing to some. From the perspective of seasoned coaches, the idea of not believing in a client is inconceivable. The alignment between coach and client goes beyond a professional fit; it’s about resonating on a deeper level. It’s about recognizing and respecting each other’s souls and being excited about embarking on a transformative journey together. (I did issue a “woo-woo” warning earlier ;))

I’m always very aware eith a new client, particularly if someone is used to doing everything they can to be the person they think they should be, allowing themselves to just be in that space can feel really vulnerable and can feel like it takes a lot to turn up. Whilst I don’t follow anything as formal as a script its usual for me to acknowledge that in some way during our first conversation – I’ve found it actually aids in the long term. I can often see a physical relaxation once that’s been acknowledged and we can move onto the rest of the conversation.

Beyond Transaction:

When this alignment occurs, I find that the coaching relationship transcends transactional boundaries. It becomes a sacred space for growth— its like a dance of energy to explore evolve. It’s not just about reaching goals; it’s a journey of transformation, where the internal flame burns brighter and stronger and acts as a guide.

A Transformative Journey:

Recognizing the deeper connection in this approach to coaching transforms it into more than just a service—it becomes a transformative journey. This dance of energy propels both coach and client towards growth, evolution, and a profound transformation. It’s about more than achieving objectives; it’s about that allusive term of authenticity.

Your Soulful Coaching Experience:

Do you resonate with this description and experience of coaching? Whether you’re a coach, a client, or someone considering coaching, share your insights in the comments. What draws you to your style of coaching, and what kind of connections do you seek in this transformative process? Your reflections might just inspire and resonate with others on their own coaching journeys. Feel free to share in the coments below.
