Powerful coaching questions

by Jen Waller

When readers sign up to get the weekly blog recap email there’s the option to share what they would like to read more about. The topic of questions is something that gets a mention – which is why if you browse through previous posts you’ll find posts such as: Questions, Questions, Questions, How to ask hard questions, and guest posts such as Frederique Murphy’s 5 Questions To Ask When Silence Sets In

As coaches we use questions a lot. It’s one of our basic tools, a fundamental aspect of what most coaches understand coaching to involve. I know it can get a bit more complicated when it comes to certain types of coaching, for example with some sports coaching. But for the purposes of this post I’m going to talk about coaching that use questions as part of the core of their approach.

Given this post is called powerful coaching questions, let’s start with a couple of questions about powerful coaching questions. What makes a powerful coaching question and how do you know if a question is powerful?

What makes a powerful coaching question and how do you know if a question is powerful?

At a very simple level my initial answer to what makes a powerful coaching question is that it works for the client you’re working with at that moment. It is a question that opens up a new perspective and insight they hadn’t previously seen. It’s a question where the client suddenly finds an answer to something they’ve spent hours, days, months and even years pondering without success.

So how will you know if you’ve asked a powerful question? Your client will tell you – either directly or with their behaviour. If you get the chance to reflect on your own coaching what do you notice that tells you that a particular question has made an impact? Likewise if you get the chance to observe and listen to someone else coach, what did you notice then that told you that a question had made an impact?

I’ve seen and heard a variety of different responses that give an indication that a question has landed powerfully – from light hearted swearing at the coach as they realised something that now seemed so obvious through to complete quiet, focusing off into the distance as they get a new insight upon a situation.

And what’s it like to be on the end of such a question? My suggestion here is that if you’ve not experienced powerful coaching questions from the clients perspective and you’re looking to set up a coaching practice then go experience some powerful coaching. It can give you great insight not only into what you’re being coached around but it can also give you an understanding that will help you when you set up your own practice.

Personally, I’ve been on the receiving end of powerful questions and had a variety of responses on different occasions I’ve had a giggling fit at something that seemed such an obstacle moments before suddenly just seemed funny to look at as something that needed to be solved, I’ve also felt a complete fool at times for not seeing a now obvious answer sooner. Then there’s been the times where after a thought a light bulb moment happens. Not forgetting total disorientation and speechlessness as whole perceptions are shattered.

Those are just some examples of responses and I’m sure you’ll be able to think of others and very specific things that you notice. I’ll also take a moment to bring your attention to the different responses, next question, action etc that you think would be appropriate depending upon your clients reaction following a powerful question landing.

Crafting powerful coaching questions that are just for your client

So how do you craft a powerful coaching question that’s unique to your client? That answer will partly depend upon your own approach to coaching – I’ve seen powerful questions that have been asked because the coach has based it upon a specific coaching model or technique. For example, it may be a question that fits into one of the sections in the well known coaching models GROW or crafted based on the structure of a specific style of questioning.

It’s one that resonates with that person and how they saw and connected to the subject. This means that some really powerful questions can come from building upon previous question and answers. The previous answers allowing the question that “hits home” to be worded specifically and deliberately taking that clients language, beliefs, motivation, what they’ve not seen etc into consideration.

Then there’s questions which are based upon common traits, misunderstandings, limiting beliefs or stumbling blocks, etc. These may be worded specifically that just being human could be enough for it to resonate with you. Other times it may be something very specific you’ve noticed about your niche perhaps specific to the clients that are attracted to the way you work.

So for example,

If you won the lottery tomorrow, so money is no problem, what would you do?

Is a question that many can respond to as beliefs around money are fairly common, at least in the western world.

If you were really OK with not asking a powerful coaching question, what coaching questions would occur to you?

Is a question that whilst having a similar structure is tailored to a specific common underlying belief about what a coaching session with a “real” coach should be like (ie they potentially think that powerful coaching means every question hits home and every second of every session must be “perfect” for a client to get any value at all.)

Then there are the questions that seem to come out of no-where. The ones where you’re in the flow and the question seem to turn up fully formed. Now some will say this is down to experience and having mastered a skill so you no longer have to deeply consider forming a question and you’ve picked up on something without giving it much thought. Others will say that this is when “you” just gets out the way and something bigger is at work.

If you’ve experienced that for yourself I’m sure you’ll have your own theories about what is happening, your whole coaching approach may even be based upon your answer to this. I’m not going to say either way is right or wrong. What I will say is that I’ve personally learned to trust those questions that turn up so fully formed and it occurs to me to ask the question.

This is a topic which I’m sure will be revisited on the blog again but for now let me leave you with some questions:

Fotolia 69221503 XS What does powerful coaching mean to you?
Fotolia 69221503 XS How would you know if you were asking powerful questions? Would your answer be different if you coached via a different medium? ie face to face/ phone/ video call/ purely by email.
Fotolia 69221503 XS What questions do you think are powerful?
Fotolia 69221503 XS What question do you hope I don’t ask you now?
Fotolia 69221503 XS What action can you take now having spent some time considering questions?

Awaking the Sleeping Giant Within

In today’s guest post Coach Diane Dutchin shares her expertise and knowledge to benefit both you and your clients.

Awaking the Sleeping Giant Within

by Diane Dutchin

"Awaking the sleeping Giant within" by Diane Dutchin

“Sleeping never moves you forward, it’s the awakening process that stirs you to action”

(DianeD)

I know, the title to this topic is not the usual you come across in your mail box like “how to uncover and tap into your niche”, or “how to attract more clients”. However, stay with me, this is an appropriate fit because it’s about you the coach and your client.

My intent is to deliver a one two punch of relevant information to empower you to reflect, to reapply methods of being and doing in your journey as a coach, and hopefully lead to a revival, renewal/refreshing to both you and your clients.

Let’s start with you the coach:

Reflect: when you first started your practice what was your attitude like? Aside from the excitement of finally doing what I felt I was created to do, I was focused on uncovering what areas of life I was deeply passionate about and connected to.

Forget about what the experts are saying you should or shouldn’t do, and what the latest niche is. What fired you up and awakened your spirit? Is that fire still there or is it a dying ember? Or, are you more motivated by external realities than your internal convictions? Stay consistent to your internal convictions. Here are some steps I follow to help me awaken sleeping giants in my journey

Revisit/Reapply: your core values and your personal beliefs. Revisiting my values gives me the opportunity to assess my present state, and how much of my values/beliefs are still in line with my living, and make adjustments where needed. By doing that you sharpen:

  • Your talents – what you know you’re really good at
  • Your passions – what you deeply care about
  • Your purpose – what is it you want your life to count for
  • Your impact – what is the outcome you’re looking to achieve

By incorporating your basic style of coaching with fresh ideas, tips and tools you can strengthen your practice, and find yourself at the advantage of serving with excellence.

Revive: your truth, your internal realities, and your purpose – not someone else! It’s easy to place too much emphasis on what others are doing, and dismiss what convicts and motivates your particular style. Yes, it takes someone with courage to stay consistent, recognize opportunities, and accept the calling to be a coach of positive change. I am not saying to ignore growth, but don’t throw out the baby with the bath water by neglecting the fundamentals you established your practice on.

Renew/Refresh: your life, your vision, your focus, your practice and your delivery. By taking the time to reflect, revisit/reapply and revive areas, thoughts, actions or saying about your life and practice, you could experience a welcomed renewal that can improve your delivery add deep refreshing to you and your practice.

All about the client:

Seeing that you’re in the coaching profession, I am going to automatically assume part of your focus when working with your client, is to:

  • Guide them towards the door of awareness
  • Empower them to open the door,
  • Challenge them to step into the journey
  • Motivate them to discover their answers, solutions, etc. in specific areas.

So, why is it some coaches overcomplicate this process? As a coach you want to remain mindful of lining up your words with your actions. I would rather have someone under promise with their words and over deliver with their actions, instead of over promising and under delivering.

Clients come to you because they have a need, and are drawn to you based on a number of factors:

  • What they’ve read on your site
  • What they heard through a referral
  • What your past clients said/testimonials
  • What was felt through the initial connection

In my experience I’ve found my most effective encounters and results came when I avoided the flashy and fancy approach. People aren’t looking necessarily for how much credentials are behind your name, or how many hundreds of clients you’ve served – all they care about is “can you help me with______?”

The basic foundational questions still works and can be extremely effective to get the journey of awareness, and empowerment to change started:

  • Why, when, where, what and how? (in whatever order)

You still have opportunity to ask other questions like:

  • What are your internal/external realities?
  • How important are values and beliefs to you?
  • On a scale ____? How do you feel about____?

My experience is that this way such questions will automatically fall into place!

There should be a natural flow when serving your clients. Be cautious of “trying” a new thing you read about, or what happens to be the “new style of coaching”. If not, it could show up during the session and mat be the last one with the client.

As a coach you can awaken and elevate areas of your personal and professional life to higher levels of fulfillment, and stir your clients forward to have a more impactful, and life transforming experience.

How do you know when an area in your life needs to be awaken, and what action do you take to revive it?

You are your Greatest Investment!

Step Up As A Coach By Leveraging Your Weaknesses 1

Mindset strategist Frederique Murphy returns in today’s guest post to share some thoughts around a common belief many coaches have:

Step Up As A Coach By Leveraging Your Weaknesses

By Frederique Murphy

"Step Up As A Coach By Leveraging Your Weaknesses" By Frederique Murphy

As a coach, working with other coaches and professionals in the service industry, such as consultants, speakers, trainers, and also corporate executives, I hear, and coach clients on this one belief that comes up again and again: “I must be perfect in order to help others.”

Can you relate?

I know that this is something that I once believed, and still from time to time, I’m reminded of it, usually when I am about to step up to a higher level.

Before we continue, let’s be clear on a few things:

  • this belief is not true,
  • this belief is what we call a “limiting belief”, as in holding onto it limits you, your capabilities, and your overall success, and
  • believing this is not abnormal: you are not the only one, who has ever believed in this.

I’d even go so far as to say that believing in this belief shows what type of coach you are, and that it is a rite of passage, and one that you can let go of when you are ready to step up. You see, when you believe in this, I see that you care, and you care for your clients, wanting to serve them to the best of your abilities. And, what I want to show you is that by tweaking that belief, you will care even more, and you will serve your clients even more.

Here is what we are going to do: we are going to imagine that you are perfect, and see how it is working for you.

As a perfect coach, when a client needs you, you can draw on your expertise to coach them. You know what technique will work, which pattern to use, what tool to leverage. And, yes, it will probably work.

But, I have a question for you: What makes your approach any different from any other perfect coach out there, who more than likely would pick the same technique, the same pattern, the same tool?
The answer is nothing.

So, how do YOU stand out?

You stand out thanks to your imperfections.

Let me explain…
Your imperfection makes you you; it enables you to connect at a deeper level with your clients. You see, what you once saw as weaknesses – for instance, when you failed at something, or tried to do something many times before you finally succeeded, actually is called experience.

And, experience makes you stand out.

There is nothing short of beautiful that happens when you combine both your expertise and your experience.

Because as a coach, when something happens to you, you, more than anyone else out there, learn from it, and will find a way to leverage this experience to work for you.

So that, when you are coaching this client, and he or she has this specific issue that you actually had too as you experienced that challenge too, yes, you will know, what technique will work, which pattern to use, what tool to leverage, AND you will be able to add your personal experience, because you’ve been there. In that instant, the connection with your client becomes stronger, and the coaching smoother and more impactful.

What you once saw as weaknesses can now be seen as strengths.

Strengths that will help you stand out and step up as a coach.

What do you think? What weaknesses of yours can you transform into wonderful strengths to assist you in your coaching? I’d love for you to share; this will be helpful for the other coaches. Comment below (and, you’ll see I’ve commented first, sharing some of my personal weaknesses)!

8 C.O.A.C.H.I.N.G. Mindset Success Strategies To Boost Your Success!

by Frederique Murphy

COACH… It is one of those words, isn’t it? Judging by the 577 million results obtained when keying the word in Google, it is something that’s definitely at the top of a lot of people’s minds!

So, how will YOU, as a coach, stand out from the crowd?

One answer. One word: MINDSET.

And, yes, MINDSET is also one of those BIG words!

I believe that your mindset drives every single thing that you do in life, and in the way that you lead yourself, your career, your business. We all have a mindset, the only difference (and, that is the one that makes the difference) is how strong and powerful yours is; your mindset is what sets you, as coaches, apart. It is THE factor that will determine how outstanding – or how average – your coaching business results are.

I know that you know that; but, what I also know is that as coaches we know these for our clients; we focus our energy and our strategies towards our clients, and it is common to forget to apply these to ourselves.

There are many mindset success strategies and I have selected 8 of them for you to focus on, using the word coaching as a mnemonic!

=> C <=

Clarity, Be clear on what you want to achieve for yourself and your coaching business.

=> O <=

Obstacles, Face and push through to overcome.

=> A <=

Action, Take actions to move forward.

=> C <=

Comfort, Step out and stretch to grow.

=> H <=

Help, Ask for help.

=> I <=

I as in you, Choose your attitude.

=> N <=

Network, Surround yourself wisely.

=> G <=

Get results, You are the key to your success, 100% responsible for your results.

Here you have them!

I’m sure that these look familiar or even too simple. BUT, do not disregard them because “they sound too easy”! These are powerful, and the power lies with you: ask yourself: do I apply this strategy daily, do I live by it, do I lead by it, and do I run my coaching business by it? You want to answer all 3 with a resounding YES for maximum impact.

These mindset strategies are powerful.

When you actually apply them, AND, when you do it consistently.

Which one of these will you apply today to boost your success? I’d love for you to share; this will be helpful for the other coaches. Comment below!
