Over the next few days I’m going to briefly recap the last years worth of guest posts that appear here each Friday.

Today we start by looking at the first three months of this year.

In the first post of 2012 Amber Fogarty shared how she is in the “habit change business” discussing something she talks about a lot with clients in “Developing Better Habits”.

Coach and trainer Lorraine Hurst then followed with a post that could be of use to both yourself and your clients. “Blue Monday – what colour will yours be?” was published just prior to the third Monday of the year – read the post to see the significance of that date!

Coach and author of “Secrets of Successful Coaches”, Karen Williams, shared her expertise and knowledge in the third guest post of the year: “How does your mindset affect your business?” Read how Karen believes mindset, marketing and business knowledge will affect a successful coaching business.

The final post in January saw Karen Wise sharing a personal experience in the post “Relationship drama.” How familiar is this incident in either your own life or with what your clients tell you?

As we started the second month of the year, coach Marie Yates turned her attention to the action taken to the goals and plans made at the start of the New Year. Aligning Values & Vision in Your Business

What was I thinking?

This thought surely crosses every entrepreneur’s mind in the business start-up frenzy, and intensifies and reverberates after the shingle’s been hung and the last business card’s been carefully arranged in its holder.

Many business owners don’t have a business degree, and some don’t have much experience. Tired of 60-hour work weeks for mediocre pay, many employees swap an ID badge for a DBA. But as time ensues, few escape the letdown of seemingly side-stepped dreams. Even fewer escape the knock back to reality. In fact, most new businesses fail. According to the Small Business Administration, only five percent survive beyond the five-year mark. Business experts tout practical reasons for failure, such as poor planning, wrong location, insufficient capital, overexpansion and the inability to stay current with technology. Some even say starting a business for the wrong reason breeds failure. Whatever the cause, fantasies of hundred dollar bills and weekday afternoons in the movie theater dim as exhaustion and reality take root.

Let’s use an example: A transition from a solo psychology practice into a wellness center that offers varied services like nutrition, massage and counseling. Visions of dollar signs and one free Saturday a month jump in the owner’s head. She hires. She gets checks. She fires. She writes checks. She’s tired. She begins thinking that maybe life wasn’t as bad as it was. She wonders what she was thinking.

What were you thinking? What were you thinking? What were you thinking? Why did you shift?

Money and freedom are fine values, and while we may indeed value them for material gain, money often symbolizes deeper values. The truth is, we can make money doing absolutely anything: Selling hot dogs at the beach. Working at the home store. Building skyscrapers. Walking labradoodles. So why this?

A closer look reveals that in the example, under our business endeavor lays the business owner’s personal values. Self-reliance, freedom of choice and equality are fully expressed in the expanded center through the nature of the service (self reliance), the varied services (freedom of choice) and by combining stigmatized counseling services with mainstream, well-accepted services (equality), while only one was expressed in the solo practice (self-reliance). And in this example, the value of money actually came to mean security and freedom, not just money for the sake of having it.

Exercise: Google “values list”. Print it out. Scan it visually and narrow it to fifteen concepts that you value and that guide your actions. Then trim it to five, then three. Entrepreneur or not, determine how your business endeavor expresses each of these values. This may require some reflection, but is an exercise well worth doing.

Our values guide us in both daily decisions and in life-changing choices, including professional success. Reminding ourselves of our ‘why’ pulls us forward when a venture starts to sour or stall. It’s easy to lose sight of your vision with those debt and stress-induced blind spots.

Values infuse passion when little else sustains us. Doing business without them generates the ordinary. Values birth vision. Be extraordinary—in business and in life.

The squirrel and the ducks

This was originally written in 2011 and shared via Coaching Confidence’s weekly email round up.

The squirrel and the ducks

This past week I took a short break. The place that we were staying was in a country setting. Woodland and a lake were all within the vicinity.

I happened to walk past a bird feeder hanging from a tree where a squirrel was busy helping itself to the nuts contained within. If you are familiar with squirrels then I suspect that this wouldn’t particularly surprise you – they are well known for using bird feeders as a source of food – even if they have to manoeuvre around complicated assault courses to be able to access them.

There was no assault courses with this particular bird feeder. There was however a group of ducks gathered below. I am not certain if the squirrel was deliberately feeding the ducks at the same time or if this was just a happy accident. One thing that did seem to be apparent – this was not an unusual occurrence and the ducks were quite happy to accept assistance from someone else.

I may be wrong but I didn’t see those ducks read any more into the situation than it was an opportunity they were not going to miss.

Sometimes, we cannot be as willing as those ducks to accept assistance or even see such opportunities that arise. We may have an idea in our own head that it is important to do everything all by ourselves.

I’ve seen that self-sufficiency manifest itself in coaches in all sorts of ways:

For example,

  • Missing the possibility of hiring someone who loves to do the business bits you hate/spend lots of your time doing. I’m not saying that you will never have to spend any time communicating or keeping track about what is happening with such tasks, just that the option is there to get assistance.
  • I’ve seen beliefs that in order to be a coach you had to be perfect, have all the answers and not require or want to use the services of a coach/mentor/other professional.
  • Choosing to “beat yourself up” and just “try harder” if you encounter a skill you’re not happy with rather than consider another alternative.
  • Ignoring/ not seeing marketing possibilities because you didn’t create them from scratch.

Today I invite you to consider the following question:

If it really didn’t mean anything about you, your skills or your business, what would be different if you took extra assistance?

How does your mindset affect your business?

Let me share with you one of my beliefs. I believe that you can have all the marketing and business knowledge you need, but unless you have the right mindset, you’ll struggle to make it in terms of running a successful business.

Our mindset has an incredible affect on what we do and how we do it. It is more than just belief and confidence, it is about the way we approach a situation, our outlook, our mental attitude and the way in which we think. It is about the language we use to talk to ourselves and others, as well as the thoughts we have in our head about a problem or a solution.

Think about it now. Have you been with someone where their mindset has not been at its best? Perhaps they have been feeling down, depressed or concerned about something. Or maybe they have been feeling unsure or frustrated. Now that’s not to say that we always have to be on top form, but noticing your mindset, your thoughts and your actions is the starting point of understanding how it impacts on your success.

Let’s think about another person you know who has a positive mindset. Someone who always sees life with the glass completely full, has energy and enthusiasm, and a zest for life.

Where do you fit?

How do you feel about that?

If you are like most people, you are probably somewhere in the middle. Some days you will be feeling fantastic, and on other days, you will want to stay beneath the duvet. So with my comment in mind that your mindset affects your success, what can you do to recognise your state and do something about it when you need to?

The first step is to recognise how you feel every day and be aware of your emotions and feelings. If you are feeling negative or frustrated, what can you do to change your state? I know that sometimes you’ll want to wallow for a while, but think about how you will feel when you’ve broken the pattern and done something else instead? One of the strategies I follow is the premise that motion changes your emotion, so physically get up, do something different and return to your task later.

The second step is to be aware of what you could do differently to retrain your brain. In a nutshell, we have thousands of thoughts every day and we need to decide what to hold onto and what ones to ditch. Our beliefs often inform the thoughts we have, which inform the feelings we have about the beliefs, then this influences our behaviour and the consequences. You then have a choice on whether you create a vicious circle or a virtuous circle. If you keep thinking negatively, which creates negative behaviour, you will enter a downward spiral, but if you break the pattern, you can create a virtuous circle. These, by their very nature, then create more happiness and wellbeing.

The third step is to be aware of the impact that other people’s behaviour has on you. You could say that it is your choice how another person’s behaviour can affect you, it is often difficult to put this into practice, especially if this behaviour is pessimistic. Generally negativity breads negativity, so it can be difficult to break the pattern. But there are things you can do about it. The late Jim Rohn said that “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”. So ensure you spend your time with inspirational people whose goals, aims and intentions are bigger than your own. When you do this, you’ll raise your game, achieve more, and get the support to step through your comfort zone quicker and more easily than you could do by yourself.

Before I move on, I’d like to give you something else to think about.

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left?
Answer: five
Why? Because there is a difference between deciding and doing!

With this in mind, what are you going to decide to do differently going forward? Are there new strategies and habits you need to put into place? Only you can decide to have a success mindset. Then when you have chosen this mindset, you will be focused on abundance rather than lack, success rather than failure, so can you see now how it can make a difference to your business?

You’ll be the one achieving results, getting more clients and generally feeling inspired and inspirational! Doesn’t this sound like a great place to be?

5 Ways to Make your Coaching Business Successful

You are a coach. You have found something that you absolutely love doing, haven’t you? Don’t you love those light bulb moments when you see your client’s face light up? You love helping people to get to where they want to be. You love the feeling of making a difference in someone’s life. You have a real passion for what you do and you feel that you have found your calling in life.

So everything is rainbows and kittens, isn’t it?

The reality is a little bit different isn’t it? You have spent a substantial amount of money and time on your training, you have had very positive feedback from people you have coached; people should be lining up for you, shouldn’t they? So where are they?

There are a few coaches who become very successful and make a good living from coaching, but there are substantially more who find themselves taking a job to make ends meet. There is plenty of advice out there for coaches to deal with their clients. There is advice on how to get rapport easily, what questions to ask and techniques to use. There is very little advice about setting up your coaching practice as profitable business. The best advice for work is find something you love doing and then get someone to pay you to do it, but if you are not earning a living from what you love doing; it is a hobby, not a business!

1. Resolve any issues you have about money

So many coaches I know have an issue about charging money for something that they love doing. They undervalue their service or feel guilty about accepting payment. As a coach, you probably know quite a lot of coaches. Who would be a good person to help you clear out issues you have about money? How can you stop limiting yourself? What are your issues you have with money? Are you self-sabotaging? It is easier asking someone to help you with an issue than trying to resolve it all by yourself. Just because you can coach someone through their money issues doesn’t mean that you can do it on yourself.

2. Start thinking about coaching as a business

If you are working for yourself, you need to learn how to be a good marketer, sales person, public relations person, bookkeeper, accountant, administrator and IT specialist. What skills do you already have in these areas? Who can help you develop these skills?

I found the best way for me to become more business orientated was to network with business people. I have learnt so much by the questions people asked me, especially the ones that completely stumped me. You don’t have to know everything to get started, but you must be willing to keep learning and keep improving as you go along. When you network, you will find plenty of people who will give you free advice and help.

Read books about business. One book that I would recommend is Dee Blick’s “Powerful Marketing on a Shoestring Budget “ which has good practical advice for small business. There are many good books available. What skills do you still need learn? Are there people who could help you in these areas?

3. Think of your business as an object

If you are your business, it is sometimes hard to think of your business objectively. I had an “Aha!” moment, when a business adviser asked me how I was marketing my business. I was getting quite defensive about it. Knowing that I came from a marketing background, he asked if I had a tin of baked beans, how would you market it? I knew instantly! I realised that I had to start thinking of myself as a tin of baked beans! Not literally, of course! I had to think of myself as a product or an object.

What is your brand? Can an outside person tell what you are offering or is it all in your head? Find someone neutral (not family or close friends) who can give you an objective viewpoint on how you are coming across at the moment. Are you coming across the way you think you are?

4. Resource yourself

As a coach, we are used to asking our clients what resources they need to help them get to where they want to be. So, what resources do you need to make your coaching business successful? Here are some of the ways that I think you might need to support yourself.

Mentors – People who are already where you want to be and are willing to guide you along the way, they could be fellow coaches or successful business people. They are the people who have been there, done that and got the bruises along the way.

Coaches – All coaches need coaches. Nobody is perfect, if you believe in coaching you should be developing yourself through coaching as well. Who is helping you to get to where you want to be?

Cheerleaders – You need people who are on your side, who are cheering you on and keeping you motivated, especially at times when you feel disappointed or frustrated.

People who can help you in your business – Do you need to do everything yourself? Are there people who can save you time by doing tasks that you don’t know how to do or don’t like doing? The most precious commodity you have as a business person is your time. Could you be spending more time doing tasks that generate money, by paying people to help you?

5. Think from your client/customers viewpoint

What ratio of “you” to “I” words are you using when you talk to someone? If you have a website or a blog, what is the number of “I”, “me”, “my”, “our” and “us” vs. “you” and “your” that you are using? It is a quick indicator of whether you are focussed on things from your viewpoint or your customer’s viewpoint. When you meet someone find out what their needs and wants are before selling yourself. Offering your toolbox of skills is meaningless to a potential client, they are interested in how their needs can be met.

If you really want to be a coach, you need to make coaching work for you as a business. So what are the changes that will make a difference?
