The Psychology of Pricing

Every coach who charges for their services has to decide upon a price. In today’s guest post Kim L. Price shares some of hir expertise and experience as she focuses on:

The Psychology of Pricing

By Kim L. Price
"The Psychology of Pricing' by Kim L. Clark

Have you ever wondered why whenever you buy something at the store, every store, the price is always something like $6.99 or $7,4.95 and never $7.00 or $75.00? Maybe you guessed it’s because of some psychological theory and if that’s what you thought, you were right. Pricing strategy is influenced by much more than the cost to produce the item or provide the service. Those who determine prices, whether self-employed Solopreneurs or corporate marketers, are advised to be attuned to the prevailing psychological inclinations of their prospective customers when considering how to price products and services.

There is a compelling reason that in every retail outlet, the prices nearly always end in .99, .98, or 95 and almost never end in .00. The reason for this unusual practice is based on the discipline called number psychology. Research in this area has persuasively shown that buyers—that is, your customers—do not like zeros. As a result, the vast majority of retail stores will not sell items for $100.00, they instead sell them for $99.95. Why? Because number psychology studies have shown that customers associate zeros with premium prices that they’d rather not pay.

At work here is an intriguing phenomenon known as the left digit effect. The effect causes our brains to (mis)interpret that $99.95 price tag as having a value closer to $99.00, instead of $100.00. Lindsay van Thoen, columnist for The Freelancer’s Union, says that our clients are like any other consumers and that when pricing contract proposals, Solopreneur consultants should keep the left digit effect in mind, follow the lead of retailers and banish zeros from our proposals, to make it easier for clients to agree to our prices.

When we are invited to submit a proposal, it is a good day. Here comes money! The last thing we want to do is to wind up in a wrestling match with a client who wants to nickel and dime us over the price. Unfortunately, clients sometimes feel that Solopreneurs inflate price quotes, even when an itemized accounting is provided. A figure that does not appear to be rounded-off, but rather seems to be specifically customized to the services requested, and contains few zeros, is said by number psychology experts to counteract the feeling that a project fee has been “rounded-up.” A price quote that contains whole numbers is more trust-inspiring and believable to certain clients.

In other words, avoid pricing a project at $5,000.00, because there are too many zeros involved. Number psychology research indicates that we’re better off pricing at $4,825.00 or even $5,175.00.

Pricing pundit Rafi Mohammed, founder and CEO of the consulting firm Pricing for Profit in Cambridge, MA, offers two more pieces of advice to keep in mind about pricing. First, our prices must reflect the value that clients place on the requested service and second, different clients place different value on given services. Other ways to make it more palatable for clients to accept our proposals are:

1) Ask the client to specify the project budget and work with him/her to provide services that you can afford to provide within that amount.

2) Provide three levels of service: good, better and best, so that clients can choose services according to their needs and budget and in a way that reflects the value placed.

A good pricing strategy is an important part of the marketing plan. It sets the stage for building a profitable enterprise. It is imperative to set prices that reflect the client’s value of what we sell and, equally important, to help clients agree that you and your prices are trustworthy.

Thanks for reading,

Kim

So You Want Results? Here Is the Formula

In this week’s guest post coach Janet Zaretsky shares some of her knowledge and experience in:

So You Want Results? Here Is the Formula

By Janet Zaretsky

"So You Want Results? Here Is the Formula" By Janet Zaretsky

As I was talking to my client, Sarah, she is complaining that she is working very hard and is not getting the results she wants. So, we get into a conversation about why that is and discover that she was doing great, producing the results she wanted in her business for months, and then… she simply stopped doing the activities she was doing that led to the results in the first place. Light bulb moment… she said, “I thought I did enough and now I could just coast!”. When she saw that ‘coasting’ cost her results, the fix was easy and turned her business results back around.

I find this is a common scenario and in all the work I do with my clients about their success, I have identified a formula that works brilliantly. Here is what I have identified and what you can do to produce results.

First, I know that most likely you ‘know’ this, but it is critical that you operate with this principle in mind: The only things that produces results is Action. Good intentions, good thoughts, wanting, thinking about it, hoping, does not produce results. Really. The only thing that produces actual, tangible results is action. Once you get yourself settled about that fact, the other 3 things that result in a failure to produce results are a function of:

1. Not making promises for results

2. Not taking sufficient amount of action

3. Ineffective actions

Let’s look more deeply into this:

1. Promised results:

a. You need to make promises and create some way of being accountable to someone, other than yourself to honor your promises. Why? Do a bit of an honesty check here- most of us are not reliable to honor promises to ourselves but are much more likely to honor promises when we have to tell someone else. This can be a coach, an accountability partner or a manager.

b. Promise results, not actions. After coaching thousands of people, one thing I know for sure- we, you and I, have good intentions. If you promise actions, you may fool yourself and do what you said, but not do what is needed to produce results. When that happens, you may get stymied as to why you are not producing results. I find it very effective to promise the result- which then has you in action and thinking creatively as you go along to produce the result.

2. Insufficient action:

a. You promise the result, then make a plan. You execute the plan. Then you evaluate the plan (depending on the promise you want to evaluate frequently). When you evaluate, you see that the actions you took were effective, but you did not take enough of them.

b. Easy fix: Build in more of the same actions.

3. Ineffective action:

a. You make the promise for the result. You create a plan. You execute the plan. You evaluate the result and you are not getting the desired results.

b. Evaluate the actions and see what actions were not effective.

c. Create a new plan of actions.

If you take the time to do this simple, yet powerful, strategy whenever you want to produce results, you will always have the power to create and produce what you want!

As always, I love to hear from you. Email me at ja***@***************ss.com

Now, almost 20 years later, I have had the privilege of coaching, speaking, designing and leading workshops and courses to over 31,000 people.

I love coaching people to be the best “them” they can be. I have discovered how great people are and how easily we all get stuck and even stopped from achieving our own potential.

10 Easy Ways You Need To Know To Grow A Business

In today’s guest post coach Leslie Hassler turns attention towards actually establishing and running a business as she offers:

10 Easy Ways You Need To Know To Grow A Business

by  Leslie Hassler

"10 Easy Ways You Need To Know To Grow A Business" by Leslie Hassler

How many months have you been investing in your business to see no results?

Here’s the interesting thing I’ve learned from being in business and coaching other small businesses to grow.

All the marketing and sales strategies work… in their own time.

Chances are that you have worked hard and doing the ‘right’ things to grow your business. You just have focused on the big sexy strategies that bring in business in the long-term, but have you hearing crickets in the short-term.

If that’s you, know this – you aren’t alone. In fact 85% of the businesses I work with are doing the same. If they can change things around and see results in the next 90 days – you can too. Here are the top 10 ways you can grow a business easily and quickly.

1. Balance out your marketing mix to include short-term (results in 90 days), medium (results in 90-180 days) and long-term (results in 180+ days).

2. Be more active in your marketing. If you wait for your phone to ring, you need to do more marketing that boosts your “Know, Like & Trust Factor”. The fastest way is through being were your clients are and talking to them. If you need to grow your business, don’t wait for business to come to you!

3. Build Out Your Circle of Influence. Have you ever played the game ‘6 degrees of Kevin Bacon’? Think of the people who through the course of their work touch your ideal client. Seek out partnerships and alliances with those businesses who best represent how you like to do business. Developing relationships with a few key people is a quick path to cash

4. Ask Your Clients To Buy Again. It’s easy to focus on getting new clients and new projects in the door, but your existing clients are more profitable. Reach out to any previous client who hasn’t purchased in the last 6 months or a year. Let them know how valuable they have been to you and see if there is anything you can do for them now.

5. Ask Your Clients For Referrals. If you love your clients, then you’ll probably love their referrals. Always be asking for referrals as a course of business, but even if the client you just called in #4 doesn’t have work for you, Then ask, “Who do you know who… ?”

6. Raise Your Price. I know this seems simple, but most people don’t adjust their pricing in accordance to their costs. I had a client who lost 20% in gross profits because she unknowingly she had undercharged. The change in her business puts $100,000 to her bottom line. I know this is a sensitive area, but know most buyers won’t even register a 10% increase in price.

7. Re-evaluate Your Profitability Priorities. It’s easy to say yes to subscriptions and little extras in your business – but you could be nickel and diming yourself to death. Cancel any unused subscription no matter how good of an idea it might be, trim back on the nice-to-have expenses and create cash to put into the growth of your business.

8. Stop Being Busy, Start Being Effective. Take a good hard look at what you do with your day. The top three things an entrepreneur or small business owner needs to do is 1.) Find The Money, 2.) Sell The Money & 3.) Serve The Money. How much green is in your calendar? If it isn’t a revenue generating task – dump it or delegate it.

9. Stop Doing It By Yourself. Gone are the days when small businesses can be successful in a silo, You get no trophy for doing it on your own. Invest in people who want to invest in you through accountability partners, masterminds or coaching. You will leap-frog your competition when you stand on the shoulders of giants.

10. Don’t Make It Harder. Simplicity and ease is what wins in business. If it sounds to hard, it probably is – especially if you are doing it alone. It’s better to keep things simple when putting together a growth plan for your business. Doing small things every day add up to a big result in the end. The easier things are, the easier they are to be consistent and sustainable. Most businesses stall out because they can’t sustain their efforts – don’t be one of them.

Use one or all of these strategies to kick-start the growth of your small business!

Principles, coaching and spirituality

Many experienced coaches will tell you how their coaching has changed since they first started. In today’s guest post experienced coach Liz Scott shares a bit about how her’s has evolved.

Principles, coaching and spirituality

By Liz Scott

"Principles, coaching and spirituality" By Liz Scott

A few years ago my life transformed. It didn’t transform in a snappy, flashy ‘fireworks’ kind of way, it was more like a gentle defrosting of icy beliefs and fears. Once these beliefs had dissolved I was left standing in mental health, freedom and wellness. Don’t get me wrong. I still experience the full range of human emotions. I feel sad, happy, angry and frustrated. It’s just that I no longer dwell and wallow in these emotions; instead I fall out of them and into peace.

It all started when I came across the Three Principles behind life. When I say principle I don’t mean ‘good idea’ I mean the fundamental spiritual facts that are at the root of the whole of the human psychological experience.

Understanding these principles has been profound. I have shifted my business and life around what I am learning, my husband is too.

If you are reading this with a half skeptical ‘yeah, ok tell me what these magic principles are’ kind of attitude then I wouldn’t blame you. In fact I’d recommend you keep a healthy skeptical mind.

On one level The Three Principles (which are mind, consciousness and thought) are just words. It’s when we understand and experience for ourselves how they operate, that the real shifts begin. These principles point towards the common denominator of the human experience; they point towards the spiritual, creative potential that is in us all.

The other night I looked up onto the moon and my heart filled with awe. I momentarily tried to imagine all the people who through the ages had gazed up at the same moon.  It was too much for my brain to compute – instead I felt a sense of wonder and connection. This feeling of wonder and connection is the birthright of all human beings. I don’t have to gaze at the moon to experience it. When I’m coaching others this is the space I want to be coaching from. It is this space of creative potential that I want to point my clients to.

Another word for it would be spirituality. This is about reconnecting people with their spiritual nature. When we are plugged into this creative infinite potential then navigating through life is more fulfilling and easeful. Life makes more sense.

As coaches I believe we are here to point our clients back to this space. I want them to reconnect with a part of themselves that they have temporarily forgotten.  There is incredible richness for us all to be in touch with this.

Coaching “By the Book”?

In today’s guest post coach Jeannette Attryde shares an insight about coaching.

Coaching “By the Book”?

By Jeannette Attryde

"Coaching 'By the Book?'" By Jeannette Attryde

So much has been written about coaching. In fact, I did a search on Amazon.co.uk for books on coaching and it returned 43,367 results. If you narrow the search to just paperback books (to remove the duplication of multiple versions in hardback and Kindle) it still gives 26,786 results. So when you start coaching and you want to try and make sure you are doing it “by the book”, which book should you be doing it by?

I have a huge hang up about making sure I do things “right”. So when I first decided to start up my coaching business I felt I needed to know what the “right” way of coaching was. The fact that I had been successfully coaching people for over 20 years, with over 18 years of that having coaching as part of my job description too, almost fell by the wayside. In my head, there was some definition, or some model, out there which was “the” way to coach somebody and to be a “proper” coach I needed to learn and practice this way.

Having already read widely on the subject of coaching I already knew that there were multiple models out there but my obsession with “right” meant I was still looking for validation of a specific path to being a “proper” coach. My next decision was to look for an accredited coaching course because if it’s accredited it must be “right”, right?

It was on that course that the scales fell from my eyes. In essence, the only “right” is what works for the person you are coaching. The “right” I had been searching for was the wrong one. I had been looking for a process, a tool or methodology. What I needed to be looking for was an understanding.

The understanding and recognition of when the person you are coaching needs to be challenged, or reassured, or probed, or encouraged to reflect. Everything about coaching is about the person you are coaching and the outcomes they are looking for. How you achieve that will be different for each person because each person is different. Not only is each person you coach different but the relationship, the dynamic, between you and the person you are coaching will be different to the relationship between them and a different coach. Even if the same tools and techniques are used, you each bring something unique to the conversation and you will have a unique way of reaching the desired outcome.

Once I surrendered myself to this truth, I felt authentic again in my coaching. The coaching I had done throughout my career before starting my business, had been organic. It had been about me trying to find the best way possible to help a person achieve a goal. And at its heart that is what my coaching will always be. So whilst I will continue to read widely on the subject I have decided that the “right” way won’t be in any of the books I read, it will be a book I write with every coaching session I hold and every outcome my clients achieve.

Finish It Up Friday:

When you set up your own coaching business and become “your own boss” there’s lots of ways you can organise your time and business. In today’s guest post coach Jaynine Howard shares one aspect of how she organises one day a week …

Finish It Up Friday:

Why I Don’t Require My Team to Work on Friday

By Jaynine Howard

Finish It Up Friday By Jaynine Howard

Friday – oh how that word can invoke a series of fleeting emotions ranging from dread to delight.

I have coined the phrase Finish It Up Friday as a way to make a mindset shift from dread to delight. It is the day to sleep in an extra hour. It is the day to enjoy that first cup of morning coffee knowing there are no real deadlines for the day. There is no better way to start a Friday than listening to the birds chirping, reading morning inspiration, and enjoying that first cup of coffee.

I and my team work long arduous hours Monday through Thursday. We do not prescribe to a normal 8 hour day. My day is typically starting by 5 or 6 am and ends around 10 or 11pm. My team works diligently providing fabulous services and meeting deadlines so that I meet my deadlines so my clients meet theirs. Much of what my team does for me is often not seen by others. They are busy researching and gathering statistics for my clients or for whatever program I am currently working on. They are busy writing media releases, preparing marketing materials, proofreading and taking care of the invoicing.

Just as many of us observe Sunday as a day of rest I and my team observe Friday as a day of rest. Adopting a casual Friday allows me and my team to recharge our batteries. When we have a fresh brain we are more creative. Also, since they know that I do not expect them to be available on Friday they know they can schedule personal appointments and plan their time off accordingly without fear that there will be work that needs to be completed.

Not much quality work gets completed when you or your employees are mentally exhausted. Using Friday to follow up with clients, finish up a few tasks or projects, and plan for the following week is a great way to unwind and prepare to enjoy the weekend. I am usually only at my desk a few hours on Friday morning taking care of loose ends. Making time to review my week and self-reflect on what went surprisingly well and what was a bit off provides me growth opportunities. I learn from the lessons of the week.

Designing a plan for the upcoming week has shown to increase productivity and increase income. Taking time to plan the tasks I will delegate, prepare for client sessions, and set aside time for writing also reduces the stress that would normally be felt if I had not planned to enjoy a successful week. I have learned when planning what I will delegate I must set up my emails to my team so they do not post until Monday morning because they are so very dedicated they will work on the tasks over the weekend regardless of the due dates.

Finish It Up Friday is a great way to self-reflect on your week, finish up projects or tasks that didn’t get completed, and prepare for the new upcoming week. Know your energy level and planning for self-care is key to success. I encourage you adopt a Finish It Up Friday and allow your employees extra time off. They will reward you with continued hard work, an increase in productivity and creativity as well as loyalty.

Who’s in Charge?

In today’s guest post Vanessa Ugatti, The True Worth Expert, shares some of her expertise and knowledge as she asks an important question about your coaching business:

Who’s in Charge?

By Vanessa Ugatti

"Who's in Charge?" by Vanessa Ugatti
Are you in charge of your business or is your business in charge of you? It’s an important question for you to answer as the impact of not being in charge may be catastrophic financially, physically and emotionally.

Typically, my clients are very good at what they do, highly conscientious, perfectionist, people pleasers, who more often than not put others first even to the detriment of themselves and their businesses. They also do not realise the full extent of what they’re doing, since their behaviour is based on their unconscious programmes, rather than rational conscious decision-making.

All humans have been programmed and are therefore hostage to a greater or lesser degree to their conditioning; some of which is beneficial and some is not. The negative or limiting conditioning creates fear-based thinking leading to behaviour which is detrimental and the person appears powerless to change this.

Of course, it’s important to provide a high level of service to your clients but certainly not at the expense of the business as this creates an imbalance which leads to many problems as alluded to in the first paragraph.

Perhaps you’re under-charging or maybe you’re discounting your fees for no apparent reason or possibly you’re doing too much work for free. You may even be doing all three, which means that you’re throwing money away hand over fist.

The more often you do these, the more money you’re losing. It also means that you’re probably spending far too much time working to make up for the shortfall and you’re possibly feeling overworked, stressed, tired and resentful.

In extreme cases, this can lead to health issues, strained relationships, lack of fun/family time/me time and ultimately overwhelm.

This certainly is the case with a new client who has also been working with clients who she doesn’t enjoy working with, even though she has a full diary!

It’s amazing how radical some behaviours can be. However, I’m pleased to report that significant changes are already occurring which are starting to bring her back into balance. When balance is returned, the war within is over.

I’d like to share a simple technique for being able to get out of your patterns and take back control by stepping out of the emotion.

1) Consciously recognise that you are experiencing some form of negative emotion.

2) Stand up (if you are sitting) and take an exaggerated step backwards so that you are literally stepping out of the emotion. Simultaneously say out loud, I am stepping out of this emotion. I am not this emotion. This emotion is not me. I am completely separate from it. Say it with emphasis. (By doing this, you are dissociating from the emotion and recognising that you are not it.) This will automatically change your state and bring you into clarity.

From this position, you can make rational decisions about what you want to do.

3) Then say out loud three times: “I choose to let this feeling go. It does not serve me. I now choose to be happy, confident or whatever other positive emotion you desire.” (In this way, you are consciously choosing a new way of thinking, feeling and acting which will serve you better.).

4) Acknowledge yourself for having consciously dealt with the emotion rather than staying in it and being its unconscious victim. Make sure that you include this step as it reinforces the new behaviour and will make you feel good.

5) As always, when wanting to create new habits and behaviours, the key is in repetition, so practise, practise, practise.

NB. If you’re in a business meeting, when you will not be able to do this, just do step 2 in your head. This means that you will be in a much better position to think rationally and therefore respond to the person in front of you in a more confident and professional manner.

The time is now for you to take back control of your business.

So if you recognise yourself in any of this, I urge you to subscribe to my website http://www.thetrueworthexpert.com where you can gain access to a free report on How to Charge What You’re Worth and Get It which has been described by one client as enlightening!

About Vanessa Ugatti

Vanessa Ugatti, The True Worth Expert and Author of International Amazon Best-seller, True Worth, How to Charge What You’re Worth and Get It, dramatically shifts the thinking for people in professional services taking them from their own perceptions of not feeling they can really charge what they’re worth, to doing just that – and more!

This unique ability, to bring out the best in people, has evolved for her over many years of facing similar challenges both professionally and personally, even questioning her own value in business.

With the development of her proprietary UV + CV + CD = CW formula, she works with professional services organisations and sole traders, instilling greater confidence and inspiring them to take the necessary action, resulting in incredibly fast changes that directly impact revenues and the bottom line.

She has always felt naturally drawn to understanding what it takes and how to make people shift. Vanessa has consistently challenged herself to experience the effects of her approach and methods and understand how a client feels. This helped her conquer many of her own fears and concerns, from dropping solo to work in a French-speaking part of Africa, launching a successful business later in life or overcoming a fear of heights by jumping out of a plane from 10,000 feet up!

The core value that drives Vanessa is authenticity; being true to herself. She finds this is the key approach to helping her clients be empowered to find their true selves and in turn their true value. This has led her to combine her more unique and some might say unorthodox way of being and be effective in industries that many would view as more conservative. She is by no means conservative. It works; some have even described her as Wonder Woman, with purple glasses, but the effect and results are still dramatic.

Work & Life Balance

Setting up or running your coaching business and juggling family and home commitments? In today’s guest post Lorna McCarty focuses upon an aspect that many find themselves examining at some point:

Work & Life Balance

– How to Juggle It Effectively

By Lorna McCarty

"Work & Life Balance - How to Juggle It Effectively" By Lorna McCarty

Every day we live with the possibility of facing something that has the potential of messing with the balance of our very existence.

We all juggle that precious balance with work, family and our health.

Ignoring any one of these areas for too long will affect the quality of our lives and those who are important to us.

But, as entrepreneurs or small business owners, sometimes our schedules get crazier than ever! We have a lot on our plates and even more tasks pile up during the course of our work week.

The trick in keeping work and life balanced is to try to keep things running smoothly by tackling each situation with care.

Be sure to keep in mind how important it is to enjoy what is good about your day and do your best to master all the facets of it and still come away with a day complete with fulfillment.

  • When things pile up remember this is only temporary.
  • Try to remain flexible as tasks start to bury you.
  • Remember you are only human and despite your determination there is only so much that can be done in 24 hours.
  • Sometimes, if you allow it, the fast pace of life can be enjoyable if you attempt to feel the fun.

Communicating the need for support is not a sin. Delegating to others can lighten the load you carry.

With this in mind, it is possible to find the time, however minimal for family and maintaining health.

You will have to learn to multi task and be willing to bring some of your activities to a temporary halt.

Avoid wasting time and energy and keep your hands full. It is a great way to keep boredom at a distance.

Stay away from being stuck in a situation that robs you of the benefits you could otherwise be enjoying. When you get stuck, take a break and explore something else you can devote your time to.

The act of balancing life is all about your willingness to be flexible.

Depending on the circumstance you are dealing with, you may need to go back and forth between your endeavors to complete the task at hand, taking steps that require patience for a positive outcome.

The most difficult piece of maintaining balance with work, family and health, is realizing the importance of watching out for ourselves as we begin to lose that delicate balance.

Be prepared when your life balance starts to tip.

  • Don’t take more tasks on than you can actually handle.
  • Be careful with your responsibilities and be dependable with family, friends and your clients.
  • Always be trustworthy and never go back on your word. Your reputation is extremely important in the business world.
  • Do it right the first time… Don’t take short cuts.

Attaining success with anything we do has everything to do with self- discipline. Keep this reminder in the forefront of your mind, especially as you make daily decisions that will affect the delicate balance we call life.
