Being Pulled by What Wants to Emerge

Flow is not about speed but about being guided by something deeper.

“The faster I write the better my output. If I’m going slow I’m in trouble. It means I’m pushing the words instead of being pulled by them.” (Raymond Chandler)

There’s a feeling to being pulled by something, isn’t there?
Whether it’s writing, coaching, or simply living, there are moments when we find ourselves moving with ease, as though something deeper has taken the lead.

It isn’t really about how fast we move.
It’s about being in sync with what wants to emerge, when our thoughts, attention, and energy begin to flow in quiet harmony.

When we’re trying to force things, the flow tightens.
Our effort becomes mechanical, and clarity slips further away.
But when we soften, when we relax into being pulled rather than pushing ahead, the next step often reveals itself effortlessly.

Sometimes that means slowing down. Sometimes it means moving with a natural momentum. Either way, the movement feels lighter because it comes from alignment rather than struggle.

Questions For Coaches

  • What helps you notice when you are being pulled rather than pushing?
  • How do you recognise the moment you’ve slipped from flow into force?
  • What helps you return to the natural rhythm of ease?
  • How might this understanding shape the way you support others in finding their own flow?

You don’t need to answer every question, just notice which one feels alive for you.
