Beyond Words: Touching the Essence

Sometimes what moves us most can’t be said, only felt.

“It’s all the unwordable things one wants to write about, just as it’s all the unformable things one wants to paint — essence.” (Emily Carr)

There’s something quietly moving about what can’t be captured in words.
The moment before understanding.
The feeling behind what we say.

It’s what draws us to express — to reach for the essence of something we can sense but not quite describe, and somehow do it justice.

Maybe that’s the heart of all creativity:
trying to point toward what’s already known somewhere deep within us.
Whether through words, colour, sound, or stillness, we’re translating feeling into form — not to define it, but to honour it.

Sometimes, the truest things are the ones that stay unspoken, resonating quietly in the space between.

Questions For Coaches

  • What does essence mean to you in your work?
  • How do you notice when a client is touching something beyond words?
  • What helps you rest in the space before understanding?
  • When have you seen truth arrive through feeling rather than explanation?

You don’t need to answer every question, just notice which one feels alive for you.
