As a coach, how busy are you?

As a student I worked part time in a coffee shop and café. One of the very things I remember being encouraged by the manager is to look busy, just in case the owner arrived. This meant that we would often be doing things just for the sake of doing stuff and looking busy.

While the individuals involved may have changed over time I found that wasn’t the first role where looking busy was encouraged.

The thing with being busy is that you are often taking lots of action – it just isn’t necessarily action that is moving you forward. So returning to my question at the start of this post, as a coach how busy are you?

Is the action you are taking actually moving you closer to where you want your coaching practice to be? Or is it action you’re taking because you think you “should” or because it’s what everyone else does etc?

When you are coaching clients you may be really good at assisting them to choose action steps that will make the biggest difference to them. You may have a whole selection of techniques, theories and methods that you use to be able to do that but do you walk your own talk?

It’s January so it’s entirely possible that you have recently created a vision about where you want your coaching practice to go in 2011 and beyond. You may also have devised a plan to get there.

It’s entirely possible that you have restricted time to work on building your coaching practice. I also know that sometimes it can feel like “real life” can get in the way. For instance, I know many coaches and trainee coaches work either part or full time doing other jobs.

Have a look at any to-do lists or schedules you have to do with your coaching practice, how much of what is on there actually moves you towards what you want your coaching practice to become?

As Joel Arthur Barker said:

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

If you think you need support to take more focused action, I’ll be running a Turbo Boost week at the start of February. You can find the full details of what is involved, including how you can reserve your place, here.

What could you achieve with a Turbo Boost Week?

What could you achieve with a Turbo Boost Week?

How to Turbo Boost your progress in 7 days

Did you start January full of excitement about the possibility of what you could achieve this month?

Perhaps with lots of grand plans about how much progress you want to make with your goals?

Were those ambitions to do with:

  • Starting a business
  • Getting more clients
  • Creating more money
  • Increasing your energy
  • Reducing stress
  • Building better relationships

Or was it something else?

Now we are this far through the year already, how are you doing with making that progress you wanted?

Often people find that “real life” can get in the way of all those plans and resolutions. Other things can be a distraction and clamour for your attention louder than your desire to make progress on those goals and aims.

Perhaps you’ve found that you struggled to even get started taking any action on your own towards making those dreams a reality. Maybe you did manage to start taking action but it quickly fizzled out.

Apart from the disappointment from not making progress on what you want, sometimes people can also draw conclusions that it means all sorts of derogatory things about their own character. Perhaps they tell themselves they are lazy or not good enough – generally negatively impacting their own self respect.

While you could stick with that negative character assassination as an explanation, personally I favour the following reason why you haven’t started made any progress:

It’s not that there is anything wrong with you – you just haven’t chosen action that has created momentum yet.

I get that sometimes it’s easier to take action than other times. I also know that there are things that can be done to make taking action simpler and even fun!

With this in mind I have created a Turbo Boost Week program to support and assist you to make progress on what you want to achieve.

In This Turbo Boost Week Program, I invite you to …

1. Identify and break through what has been holding your progress back

This all important piece will be the very first piece in our work together. Your “Get Ready” packs and the Platinum “Get Steady” call are all designed to release your stuck points, limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours that have undoubtedly kept you from creating more progress you want.

2. Have a whole week of support and accountability to make a huge difference in the action you take

Both the Platinum and Gold options provide a process that will help you to make it easier to take the action you have been avoiding. 3 Action Day calls and the bonus action trackers will assist you to be efficient. It will also act as a constant reminder of how much you have already done rather than just what you have left to do which can dint your self respect and confidence.

3. Focus on action that will move you forward the quickest

It’s very easy to be “busy” doing stuff but how much of that actually moves you closer to what you want? With the Turbo Boost program you will be guided to place your focus upon action that will make the biggest difference. This means that you can get more done without dramatically increasing the number of hours you’re working!

4. Create a plan to move you forward

This is not a program that is just about how far you come in 7 days. It’s designed to get the momentum going so that it is easier for you to keep moving afterwards than it was prior to your Turbo Boost Week.

Influence your own life

“You don’t have to be a “person of influence” to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they’ve taught me.” (Scott Adams)

I have just got back from assisting on a training in London. One of the compliments I received while I was there was that they could tell who had influenced my style and my work.

One reason I took this as a compliment is firstly because the person they had identified as an influence is someone I think is world class at what they do.

The other reason I took it as a compliment is that several years ago I made a conscious decision to surround myself with those whose work I admired. It’s something I’ve found can really influence how easily I have a “good” day. Especially when I include people, events etc who when I found that when I was around things seemed easier or more pleasant.

You may have read or heard interviews with musicians or actors who will credit other acts or artists as being an influence on their style.

This does not mean that these performers copy those who have been influential. Nor does it mean that the influencers have magically transformed those spectators.

Part of the dictionary definition of influence is “the capacity of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behaviours, opinions, etc, of others”

For me, the key part of that the phrase is there is “a compelling force”, it’s not about removing all choice.

While I have made a conscious decision to be around positive influences, in the past I have also made decisions to remove and/or limit exposure from being around other situations who’s influence I found not to be positive.

It seems to make sense to me that by spending more time around the positive influences and less around those that don’t. This week I invite you to play with the following to influence your own life:

1. Make a list of at least 10 things, people, events, activities, places etc you know that it’s easier to feel fantastic/have a good day when you include them.

2. Make a list of at least 20 things that bug you but not enough for you to have taken action on yet – these don’t have to be big things – it may just be an occasional leaking tap in the bathroom.

3. This week I invite you to spend some time enjoying connecting with someone or thing from your first list. I also invite you to take action to remove something from your second list.

4. Notice how this influences you and your life.

Create a fantastically influential week

Love

Jen
